Tarsal tunnel syndrome involves irritation of the tibial nerve or its branches behind the inner ankle. It can cause burning or numbness in the sole, but several more common disorders can mimic it.

Common symptoms

1. Burning or tingling in the sole
2. Pain behind the inner ankle
3. Symptoms with standing or walking
4. Occasional numbness into the toes

Diagnosis and assessment

Assessment distinguishes plantar fascia pain, peripheral neuropathy, lumbar nerve irritation and tendon disorders by testing sensation, strength and foot, ankle and spine movement.

Physiotherapy at PhysioTech

1. Modify aggravating standing and walking
2. Address relevant ankle movement and mechanical factors
3. Use gently dosed neural mobility when appropriate
4. Progress foot and calf strength and walking tolerance
Adjunct modalities do not replace assessment, exercise, graded loading or outcome review.

When medical review is needed

Foot weakness, increasing sensory loss, a non-healing wound or diabetes-related symptoms need prompt medical review.

Book an assessment

If symptoms affect walking or sport, book an individual assessment at PhysioTech in Zahraa El Maadi.
