Thoracic outlet syndrome describes compression or irritation of nerves or blood vessels between the neck and chest. Neurogenic presentations are more common, while colour change, coldness or swelling requires prompt medical assessment.

Common symptoms

1. Neck, shoulder or arm pain and tingling
2. Heaviness or fatigue with overhead activity
3. Reduced grip in some cases
4. Swelling, colour change or coldness in vascular cases

Why accurate diagnosis matters

Symptoms can overlap cervical radiculopathy, carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome and shoulder disorders. Postural tests alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

PhysioTech assessment

We assess symptom behaviour, movement, strength, sensation and aggravating factors, while screening the spine, nearby joints and peripheral nerves. No single test or scan determines the plan.

Physiotherapy management

1. Temporarily modify aggravating positions
2. Use breathing and thoracic or shoulder mobility work when indicated
3. Progress scapular and trunk strength
4. Rebuild work and sport tolerance without persistent symptom provocation
Adjuncts such as manual therapy, dry needling, kinesio taping, electrotherapy or therapeutic ultrasound are used only for a defined supporting goal. They do not replace assessment, exercise, graded loading or outcome review.

When medical review is needed

Sudden swelling, colour or temperature change, severe pain or increasing weakness needs urgent medical assessment.

Book an assessment at PhysioTech

If symptoms affect sleep, work, walking or sport, book an individual assessment at PhysioTech in Zahraa El Maadi to identify the likely driver and build a measured plan.

FAQ

Is posture the only cause?

No. It may contribute, but nerves, vessels and the cervical spine must be assessed.

Does every case need surgery?

No, but vascular symptoms or progressive weakness require specialist review.
