What Is Triceps Tendinopathy?

Pain behind the elbow during pressing or throwing may arise from the triceps tendon at the olecranon. Temporary symptom reduction is not enough if tendon capacity is not rebuilt.
The triceps tendon transfers muscle force to the olecranon to extend the elbow. Tendinopathy reflects altered tissue capacity and load response rather than a simple inflammation that requires complete rest.
It may affect gym users, throwers and people with repeated pushing demands, and it should be distinguished from bursitis and joint pain.

Common Symptoms

• Focal pain behind the elbow.
• Pain with bench press, push-ups or throwing.
• Tenderness at the tendon insertion.
• Stiffness after rest or reduced pushing capacity.

Causes and Aggravating Factors

A rapid increase in pressing volume or intensity, repeated throwing, technique change or a fast return after a break may exceed current tendon capacity.

Conditions That Can Look Similar

Olecranon bursitis, elbow-joint degeneration, posterior impingement and an acute partial tendon injury.

How PhysioTech Assesses the Condition

We assess pain location, elbow motion and extension strength, test pressing at different loads and review recent changes in training volume and intensity.

Baseline Measures

Pain during a chosen task, elbow-extension strength, tolerable repetitions, push-up quality and next-day response.

When Imaging or Medical Referral May Be Needed

Sudden loss of extension strength, a palpable gap, major bruising after injury or a hot red swollen elbow requires medical review.

Triceps Tendinopathy Treatment and Physiotherapy

1. Settle Symptoms and Manage Load

Temporarily reduce the volume or angle of pressing that sharply provokes symptoms while keeping tolerable exercise in the plan.

2. Restore Movement and Control

Restore elbow and shoulder motion and refine technique. Isometric or light resistance work may begin according to irritability.

3. Build Strength and Capacity

Progress from slow resistance to heavier loading, then speed and power when relevant to the patient.

4. Return to Work or Sport

Return to gym or throwing is guided by tolerance to a full session, a good 24-hour response and appropriate side-to-side strength.

The PhysioTech Treatment Philosophy in Cairo

At PhysioTech Clinic in Zahraa El Maadi, Cairo, the plan is not built on an imaging label alone. We connect symptoms with movement, strength, capacity and the activities the patient wants to regain. Clear baseline measures are recorded and retested. Manual therapy or other adjuncts may be used for a defined purpose, but they never replace therapeutic exercise, graded loading and reassessment.
Tendons need calculated loading and recovery. We do not chase pain with passive sessions alone or progress faster than tissue capacity.

Red Flags That Need Prompt Medical Review

A pop with sudden weakness, major bruising or a gap, marked heat and redness, fever or inability to extend the elbow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stop triceps training?

The exercise and dose are usually modified rather than completely stopped, unless an acute tear is suspected.

Does pain mean a tear?

Not always. Acute tears are more likely to involve sudden weakness, bruising or a clear traumatic event.

Does massage heal the tendon?

It may change associated symptoms, but it cannot replace progressive loading to restore capacity.

When Should You Book an Assessment?

Persistent posterior-elbow pain that limits pressing deserves assessment to confirm the source and suitable loading dose. You can book an individual assessment at PhysioTech Clinic in Zahraa El Maadi, Cairo, to build a plan around your presentation and goals.
