When Do You Need Physiotherapy, Not Just Massage?
اقرأ المقال بالعربيةMassage may support relaxation and temporarily reduce soreness, but it is not a substitute for assessment when a problem persists, recurs or limits movement, work or sport. Physiotherapy identifies what needs training or medical referral and sets measurable goals.
What does a physiotherapist assess?
The clinician reviews symptom history and aggravating and easing factors, then examines movement, strength, balance, gait and function. With radiating pain or numbness, sensation, muscle power, reflexes and neurological tests may be relevant. The plan commonly includes education, exercise and load management, with manual therapy or other options when useful.
When is massage alone insufficient?
Assessment is advisable when pain persists or returns, weakness or numbness appears, a sports injury occurs, movement becomes limited, recovery follows surgery or fracture, or rest and massage have not restored function. Repeated locking, falls or loss of balance also need functional review.
When can massage help?
It may be an adjunct for tissue sensitivity and comfort before exercise. Its value should be judged by improved movement, sleep and activity, not only relaxation during the session.
Seek medical care for chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden weakness, bladder or bowel change, fever with severe pain, major trauma with deformity, or unusual night pain.
A good rehabilitation session should explain goals, provide a clear home plan and remeasure motion, strength and function. Repeated identical sessions based only on machines or massage deserve review.
At PhysioTech in Zahraa El Maadi, Cairo, individual sessions begin with assessment. Exercise therapy, manual therapy, dry needling, kinesio taping, electrotherapy and therapeutic ultrasound are selected only when appropriate.
