De Quervain tenosynovitis irritates the sheath of two thumb tendons on the radial side of the wrist. Repeated gripping, lifting or infant care may provoke it, but pain severity does not directly measure tissue damage.

Common symptoms

1. Pain or swelling at the thumb base
2. Pain with gripping or lifting
3. Difficulty opening jars or using a phone
4. Tenderness on the thumb side of the wrist

Why accurate diagnosis matters

Thumb CMC arthritis, wrist ligament injury and nerve irritation can mimic the condition. Provocation testing is interpreted with the whole examination.

PhysioTech assessment

We assess symptom behaviour, movement, strength, sensation and aggravating factors, while screening the spine, nearby joints and peripheral nerves. No single test or scan determines the plan.

Physiotherapy management

1. Modify gripping, lifting and repetition
2. Use an appropriate thumb-wrist support when indicated
3. Restore comfortable motion then progressively load the tendons
4. Retrain work and household tasks
Adjuncts such as manual therapy, dry needling, kinesio taping, electrotherapy or therapeutic ultrasound are used only for a defined supporting goal. They do not replace assessment, exercise, graded loading or outcome review.

When medical review is needed

Pain after major trauma, deformity, sensory loss or persistent disability despite appropriate care requires hand-specialist review.

Book an assessment at PhysioTech

If symptoms affect sleep, work, walking or sport, book an individual assessment at PhysioTech in Zahraa El Maadi to identify the likely driver and build a measured plan.

FAQ

Is complete rest required?

Usually load is modified rather than stopped completely, followed by graded reloading.

Should the splint be worn all day?

Duration is individualised to balance symptom relief and movement.
Note: Educational content only; it does not replace diagnosis.
