Iliotibial band syndrome is a common source of lateral knee pain in runners and cyclists. It often follows a rapid load change; aggressive stretching is not automatically the answer.

Common symptoms

1. Focal outer-knee pain after a predictable distance
2. Pain with downhill or repetitive running
3. Tenderness near the lateral femoral epicondyle
4. Relative relief after stopping activity

Diagnosis and assessment

Assessment distinguishes meniscal, patellofemoral and lateral tendon disorders and reviews training volume, speed, terrain, footwear and hip capacity.

Physiotherapy at PhysioTech

1. Temporarily adjust running volume
2. Progress hip, knee and calf strength
3. Assess movement and running mechanics when relevant
4. Grade distance, speed and terrain on return
Adjunct modalities do not replace assessment, exercise, graded loading or outcome review.

When medical review is needed

Marked swelling, locking, inability to bear weight or major trauma requires medical assessment.

Book an assessment

If symptoms affect walking or sport, book an individual assessment at PhysioTech in Zahraa El Maadi.

FAQ

Is IT band stretching enough?

No. Load management and lower-limb strengthening are usually more important.

When can I run again?

When symptoms and strength allow graded running without next-day deterioration.
Note: Educational content only; it does not replace diagnosis.
