What Is a Wrist Sprain?

A fall onto the hand or a forceful twist may cause a simple sprain, but it can also hide a small fracture or important ligament injury. Treatment therefore depends on pain location and mechanism, not swelling alone.
The wrist contains several small bones and many stabilising ligaments. A sprain ranges from stretched fibres to partial or complete disruption.
Ignoring persistent symptoms or returning too quickly to heavy loading can contribute to stiffness, weakness or chronic instability in selected injuries.

Common Symptoms

• Pain after a fall or twist.
• Swelling, bruising or reduced grip.
• Pain during weight bearing or push-ups.
• Clicking or a sense of instability in some cases.

Causes and Aggravating Factors

Falls on an outstretched hand, contact sport, sudden lifting or forceful rotation can injure wrist ligaments. Pain location guides assessment but does not identify a structure on its own.

Conditions That Can Look Similar

Scaphoid fracture, TFCC injury, De Quervain tenosynovitis and thumb-joint injury.

How PhysioTech Assesses the Condition

We assess tenderness, swelling, motion, grip force and appropriate stability tests, while screening the thumb, forearm and nerves when indicated.

Baseline Measures

Pain, swelling, flexion and extension, deviation, grip force and tolerance to weight bearing through the hand.

When Imaging or Medical Referral May Be Needed

Marked scaphoid tenderness, deformity, inability to move, numbness or persistent pain after significant trauma requires imaging and medical review.

Wrist Sprain Treatment and Physiotherapy

1. Settle Symptoms and Manage Load

Protect the wrist from provocative movement. A splint may be used for a defined period while finger and elbow movement are maintained.

2. Restore Movement and Control

Restore motion without repeatedly forcing a painful end range, then add wrist and forearm control exercises.

3. Build Strength and Capacity

Progress grip, flexion, extension and rotation strength, followed by graded weight bearing from an elevated surface toward the floor.

4. Return to Work or Sport

Sport return requires useful motion, strength, stability and confidence during pushing, safe-fall drills and sport-specific tasks.

The PhysioTech Treatment Philosophy in Cairo

At PhysioTech Clinic in Zahraa El Maadi, Cairo, the plan is not built on an imaging label alone. We connect symptoms with movement, strength, capacity and the activities the patient wants to regain. Clear baseline measures are recorded and retested. Manual therapy or other adjuncts may be used for a defined purpose, but they never replace therapeutic exercise, graded loading and reassessment.
We balance early protection with prevention of unnecessary stiffness; immobilisation and exercise dose vary according to the structure and grade.

Red Flags That Need Prompt Medical Review

Deformity, severe bony tenderness, persistent numbness, cold or blue fingers, rapid swelling or sudden loss of grip strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every sprain need a splint?

No. The decision depends on location, grade and concern for fracture or instability.

Do normal X-rays show ligaments?

They mainly help exclude fracture; some ligament injuries require clinical testing or additional imaging.

When can exercise start?

Safe movement begins according to stability and irritability rather than a fixed timetable.

When Should You Book an Assessment?

Wrist pain after a fall that is not settling or is limiting grip deserves early assessment. You can book an individual assessment at PhysioTech Clinic in Zahraa El Maadi, Cairo, to build a plan around your presentation and goals.
